Why I don't want you to skip client work

Too often, I see people spend months building a product, writing a book or developing a program before they’ve worked directly with enough people to understand what those people actually need.

Then they try to sell it—and discover that buyers don’t want what they built.

That can cost a great deal of time, money and effort.

Twenty years inside a company can give you valuable expertise. But working independently with your own clients teaches you something additional. You have to earn their trust, explain the value, ask for payment, set expectations and take responsibility for delivery.

You also see what happens when your approach meets someone else’s circumstances, without your employer’s team, systems or reputation behind it.

First, sell and deliver your services. Work with enough clients, over enough time, to understand the problems deeply.

Some issues will belong to one particular client. Others will appear repeatedly. As you work, you’ll learn to tell the difference.

Those repeated patterns are the foundation for your IP: your point of view, informed by what you’ve actually seen and helped people do.

What could you build?

Intellectual property is more than a course or a named framework.

In this program, we use “IP” to describe the original content, methods and tools you create—and the business assets you build around them.

Depending on your experience and goals, your project could be:

What do you actually own?

The aim is to develop original writing, recordings, tools and supporting materials you can build a business around. We work from your own experience and material you have permission to use.

The platforms used to distribute them are a separate consideration. A social account, podcast platform or newsletter service can change its rules or restrict access.

We’ll consider how your project connects to assets you can retain and manage, including your original files, website and permission-based audience relationships.

Building IP can create more leverage. It does not automatically create passive income; publishing, marketing, support and improvement still require work.

You explain certain things repeatedly.

Clients struggle with similar decisions. You use an approach that helps them move forward. Perhaps you’ve already created exercises, templates or tools that make the work easier.

Now you want to capture those insights and make them useful beyond each individual engagement.

Inside Build Your IP, we examine your actual client experience, develop your point of view and choose a format that fits the people you want to reach.

The goal is to build something useful enough to earn attention, trust and payment.

What we’ll work on

Review the problems clients paid you to solve, what you did and what changed.

Separate recurring needs from individual circumstances. Identify the problem and audience your project will serve, along with the evidence you have and the questions still unanswered.

Make your ideas and approach clear.

Depending on the project, this could include a method, book outline, newsletter concept, podcast premise, signature talk or structured program.

Develop a useful first piece of original material that demonstrates the approach.

Decide how the project fits into your business.

What will people pay for? Who pays? What is included? What will it cost you to create, maintain and deliver?

A book, newsletter or podcast may generate revenue directly, support other offers or do both. We’ll make that role explicit.

A focused test with relevant buyers, readers, listeners or partners, with responses and unanswered questions documented.

Client experience gives you a foundation. The new format and commercial offer still need testing.

What you’ll develop

  • One focused IP project with a defined audience and purpose.
  • A point of view grounded in relevant client experience.
  • An initial structure and a useful sample, prototype or tool.
  • A proposed monetization model and realistic production or delivery plan.
  • A focused test with relevant buyers, readers, listeners or partners, with responses and unanswered questions documented.
  • A practical plan for what to build, improve or test next.

The sprint helps you develop and test the first version. It does not promise a completed book, established podcast, large audience or specific revenue within 30 days.

Is this the right starting point?

This program is for you if:

  • You are already working directly with paying clients.
  • You have delivered relevant work to multiple clients over time.
  • You can explain the recurring problems you see and the changes your work helps create.
  • You want to develop original material around that experience.
  • You have one project you’re ready to focus on.
  • You’re willing to create, seek feedback and do the work between calls.

There is no automatic waiting period that makes someone ready. What matters is the depth and relevance of your delivery experience.

You can build alongside a job, and you don’t need a large audience.

We review your experience and proposed project before enrollment.

How we work

This is a live 30-day sprint with set start and finish dates.

You work on your own project throughout, supported by four live group working sessions, replays, practical exercises, personalized feedback and community chat.

This is a group program. You’ll work on your own project and receive guidance and feedback within the group format. Private one-on-one sessions are not included. If you need more in-depth support, we can discuss a separate paid engagement, subject to availability.

Places are limited so participants receive meaningful attention. We review inquiries to make sure your experience, project and needs fit the sprint.

About Krista

I’m Krista Mollion, founder of FU Money Plan, former 6 x CMO. I also built and sold an eight-figure agency.

Over nine years working for myself, I’ve tested 12 income streams and made six pivots. I’ve built services, products, courses and communities, and learned how much the format changes what you earn and how you spend your week.

We’ll look at what your client work has taught you, what your audience needs and how to develop something that makes sense for your business and your life.

The aim is to build a body of work and assets that give you more options over time.

Questions you may have

Do I need paying clients already?

Yes. You must have worked directly, one-on-one, with multiple paying clients and have enough delivery experience to understand the recurring problem you want to build around.

If you need help reaching that stage, begin with Build Your Services Business.

I have a long corporate career. Isn’t that enough?

Your professional experience is valuable, and we will use it.

For this program, you also need experience selling and delivering relevant work independently. Working with your own clients helps you understand buying decisions, expectations, scope and outcomes in a different setting.

How many clients do I need?

Enough to distinguish a recurring pattern from one person’s circumstances.

We look at the relevance, depth and duration of your work, alongside what you learned and the results you can explain. Signing clients without delivering the work does not establish readiness.

Can I build a newsletter, podcast, book or speaking platform?

Yes. These are all possible projects.

We’ll assess the audience, point of view, original material and commercial purpose, then choose a realistic first version to develop during the sprint.

Do I have to build a course?

No. Your project might be a newsletter, podcast, book, signature talk, toolkit, workshop, program or another suitable format.

Can I build my entire creator business in 30 days?

The sprint focuses on one project and its first useful version.

Building a body of work, an audience and reliable revenue takes continued effort beyond the program.

Does client experience mean the new offer is already validated?

No. It provides evidence about the problem and your approach.

The new format, price and buying experience still need testing.

Does this include legal protection for my IP?

The program focuses on developing original material and its commercial use. Legal registration, ownership agreements and legal advice are outside its scope.

What comes after Build Your IP?

Market, Launch, and Sell is for an offer you’ve already sold and delivered to paying customers. It focuses on reaching more buyers and improving your marketing and sales process. Completing Build Your IP does not automatically establish readiness.
